BIO

As Sunken Cages, Momin’s practice is the result of a twenty-year evolution that refuses the logic of Western electronic music from the inside out. Where most producers treat the drum machine as a simulation of acoustic percussion, Momin dismantles that assumption entirely, constructing kits from South Indian percussive traditions, and electronic sound design that have no business being in the same room together. The result is not fusion. It is something that did not exist before.

Trained by US avant-jazz legend Andrew Cyrille and rooted equally in the Black music traditions of the AACM and the rhythmic cosmologies of Indian Folk percussion, Momin has developed a live methodology that functions as a philosophical stance as much as a musical one. On stage, Sunken Cages is a sonic ritual: a system of live-looped layers and improvised decisions where real-time research meets raw, percussive trance.

That philosophy has been tested and sharpened at recent residencies at UIUC, the University of Michigan, Bard College, and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation in Guelph – not as a visiting performer, but as someone who coaxes various music departments to work together.

Signed to Mahorka Records and Akuphone, he has been commissioned for a remix by Depeche Mode, featured in Wire, The Fader, The Quietus and Resident Advisor, and programmed at Big Ears, LeGuessWho? and the Kennedy Center. Sunken Cages occupies a rare position: critically recognized across jazz, electronic and avant-garde circuits without belonging fully to any of them. That refusal to be contained is not a liability. It is the point.

“Meanwhile, lead single ‘The Source’ [ produced by Sunken Cages] is funk-infused from the get-go, electronic sounds saturating the empty space,

followed by a wailing sax, echoing dizzyingly around the beat.

Memphis Magazine (Weekend Pick) (May 19, 2022)

“This show is a unique hybrid between live performance and production. You’ll also hear the influence of street sounds from underground dance music from Sao Paolo to Durban to Mumbai and beyond.

The masterful mix of acoustic and electronic drums and cultures makes for a musical experience not to miss.”

“In recent years, drummer and producer Ravish Momin, AKA Sunken Cages, has chalked up a solid track record of cross-breeding production techniques,

with an impressive level of innovation.
